Tewkesbury Town Council - Restoration of Public Benches

In March 2020, Severn Seating was contacted by Tewkesbury Town Council to undertake a survey of the public benches located in and around Tewkesbury town centre. This included benches in the High Street, Church Street, Back of Avon and other locations. In total, there were nineteen that required restoration.

Costs were submitted to the Council which were accepted and the project began. The majority of benches could be removed and we started with the High Street and Church Street. Each bench was taken back to our workshop and disassembled. The heavy cast ends were cleaned and painted using Hammerite black. The timber slats were belt sanded to remove all old paint and varnish and then treated with two coats of Osmo 420 Clear Satin. Assembly using new stainless steel nuts and bolts completed the job.

Once finished, the refurbished benches were taken back and bolted into position.

There was a small number of benches that could not be removed; these were restored in situ with new timber slats as required.

The project was very interesting and, at times, challenging. We have had many comments from the public saying how nice they look as they were looking very shabby. Tewkesbury Town Council also thanked us for a job well done.
